Almost the entire time we were watching The Cow in class, I found it ironic that none of the characters spoke about a the animal in a way pertaining to food. If I'm being completely honest, the first thoughts that crossed my mind when thinking about a cow is either milk or the many ways the animal can be used to make a decent meal. I even expected the character who mocked Hassan and his affection for the cow to make a remark about a more appropriate use for the animal rather than being a pet, but even he failed to do so.
For the first few minutes I thought that Hassan was raising the cow to eventually use to feed his family until I realized that it was actually a part of his family. Watching the movie I just kept thinking "This is really weird, nobody is acknowledging the fact that Hassan is walking around with a cow as if it's a dog." In a way, the movie took me out of my comfort zone to see a farm animal "domesticated"..not just any farm animal, either, but a cow! It was interesting to flip things around and witness Hassan caring for his cow (an animal I have as part of a meal) the way I do my dog or cat.
