The Reluctant Fundamentalist-Billy Grandizio

I think the book and film both did a good job on commenting upon fundamentalism! Jim does a great job in the movie about talking about how important fundamentalism is import to Underwood Sampson, especially in his big speech about how they focus on the fundamentals. I feel like in general the big picture to me was how fundamentalism played a big role in how corporate america is and how the middle east is viewed! I feel like corporate America is all about making money and how cutthroat it is! We as Americans will do anything to make a big buck! Jim wanted Changez to get rid of certain people that he realized he could not fire! These things to Americans are just basic fundamentals to make money! Step on the weak to become stronger!

I believe the fundamentals we think of when we hear about the middle east is terrorism! We as Americans automatically relate the Middle East to Terrorism. Changez in the movie was accused so many times of being of terrorist, when in reality he was totally innocent! Bobby's view on Changez couldn't have been more wrong, and I believe that as Bobby is in the back of the car driving away he realizes that his views on people of the middle east have been completely twisted and wrong!

I also believe that the book and movie were very far off from their depictions of the characters! The biggest in my opinion was Erica. I understand that Hollywood and big pictures in general need to create a compelling storyline, but they did not portray Erica as the way she was in the book at all! She would have not broken down as much as she did in the movie and been as depressed.

This class is really opening my eyes to the film and literature out there that I had no idea even existed! I feel like we are brain washed in high school, and we really need to explore more film and books from the world!

  1. I absolutley agree with you about Erica. She was a writer not a photographer! Why did they do that? Are photographers cooler in Hollywood than writers? It might be because I don't particularly fancy Kate Hudson, but I thought her fake black her was over-the-top emo depressing. In the book, I pictured Erica as very pretty, not as edgy, but just a little off. Her being off was more of something that Changez noticed, not an obvious crowd stopping type of thing.

  2. Billy,
Excellent comments about the fundamentalisms of the North American big buck, and I believe you are right on in your analysis of the film's character, Bobby. He really curses himself at the end, in my opinion, for misjudging, for assuming the worst (racist assumption, if you ask me) of Changez. I'm interested in how you read the ending of the book. Did you think it was just a non-eventful dinner? did you suspect either the American or Changez?
