Questions for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Saving Face

I thought our class discussion after watching this film was excellent, and I encourage you all to incorporate those comments into your blog posts. I do have a few other questions for you as well, though. I'm interested in your thoughts on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's documentary Saving Face after having watched Farrokhzad's documentary The House Is Black. I think the two films might be interesting to compare formally as well as for their content. You might also choose to reflect upon how we as North Americans watch Saving Face (and/or other films from other non-Western nations). Katherine made a humorous/truthful point in class about "thank goodness for a happy end." You might think about what filmic "happy endings" vs. "unhappy endings" mean in a cultural context. You might also think about Jessica's remark on cultural relativism and its shortcomings, and about Laura's finding parallels between acid burns and the epidemic of rape in the U.S. Lastly (or firstly), how might we learn to respect other cultures' arts? And what must we first learn or know before being able to respectfully critically evaluate them?
