It's My Life, a documentary about Zackie Achmat's AIDS activism, is filmed by South African filmmaker Brian Tilley. In addition to highlighting the importance of grassroots activism, the film focuses on the daily life of someone courageous enough to risk his own life for the betterment of others' lives. That said, it is a very, very "basic" documentary. I'm interested in what you thought both about the issue at hand, the film as a film, and any cultural observations you might want to make. Also, paired with this film is the reading by Phaswane Mpe, Welcome to Our Hillbrow. It is a quick, volcanic read. Link your thoughts pertaining to the text to It's My Life. Compare, contrast. Welcome to two very provactive (and hopefully not reductive) portraits of very particular instances of South African life.
