It's My Life

Wow. What else can you say about this? Zackie Achmat is a patient that has HIV. He is not a run of the mill HIV patient though. He refused to take any medication until medication was made readily available to the public and affordable costs. It was really astounding to me. The determination and heart that Zackie showed was truly inspiring. I could not imagine being in his shoes. You could obviously see how sick he was getting, and how painful his journey was. This documentary got me to thinking. Would  I be able to do what Zackie did? Would I have the courage to not take medication for the greater good? I would have to say the answer would be no. I feel like that sounds selfish, but I think you need to look out for yourself first and foremost. I say that because, what good are you to the fight if you are dead? Maybe it is a selfish attitude, but I would like to believe that many people would be on my side, so that I do not feel like a bad person. I am not completely selfish though, if it meant saving one of my own family members I would not hesitate to do that. This documentary is another example of how lucky that a lot of us have it living in this country. It is unbelievable that people can not readily get the medication they need for severe diseases such as HIV. I am so glad that I live in this country and am able to get top notch care whenever I need it. This was just really eye opening.
