Its My Life-Comparison to Gandhi - Chris Prowant

The film It's my life I thought was very interesting, considering it was focusing around one man who decided to disregard his chance for personal survival and help peruse a more global survival of AID's victims in South America. First what he did was very brave. To be able to ignore his doctors wishes for better health care and medicine simply for the purpose of helping other is a great feat. I think this film did a good job getting the message of the struggle out there, because instead of creating a dramatization of what is going on, it uses the style of documentary to help elaborate a better and more impactful story. It is impactful simply because since we see his daily life it makes us, the viewers, more sympathetic to the cause.
A comparison to history, after watching this, would be one to Gandhi. Now I am not saying that this man is as legendary as Gandhi, however what he is doing is similar to Gandhi's teachings. Gandhi went on a hunger strike and it was a non violent attempt to bring attention to the issue he was facing. Zach in the film is doing the same thing by not taking his medicine. He is putting the victims in South Africa before his needs as a person. The two people share the same non violence and as shown through recent history the best way to bring light to a subject so it can have change is through non violence, which is also shown through other leaders like Martin Luther King. So what I think the film has shown me personally, more then the help needed for the AIS's problem in South Africa, is that Non-Violence is the best way to solve problems because it ends with much more positive solutions.

  1. I agree with your comparison of Gandhi and Zackie. Both were in equally dangerous situations and their methods surely got attention. I just wonder if it was worth it to go through all that suffering on your own, with no guarantee that someone will follow or your accomplish your goal. It brings attentions to the people, but nothing may ever come of it. Zackie also seemed to be the only one to agree to stop taking his medicine.
