"It's My Life"- Billy Grandizio

I found the documentary "It's My Life" to be very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The fact that Zackie had so many opportunities to gain access to medication for his disease, yet refused to do so until it was made publicly available was incredible!  Zackie's activism is one thing I would like to really talk about. After watching this documentary, and seeing how influential Zackie was on the AIDS activists in South Africa I decided to research him more. His leadership was incredible, and his ability to get his point across without getting flustered or angry was amazing as well. He was very passionate about getting the drugs on the market for everyone to access, and it was unbelievable how adamant he was about not taking the medication. With his doctor even staring him in the face and telling him he needed medication, he still refused to take it! Zackie is the true definition of a leader! As I was researching, I found something very interesting. When Zackie was still in grade school, he was a big activist for the anti-apartheid movement. One day he set a fire in his school, just so he could force students to leave school and join an anti-apartheid movement that was happening that day! I was just amazed by everything about this film. I also was very impressed with Zackies parter. I do not remember his name, but his willingness to stick by Zackie's side and do whatever it took to help was very inspiring. I think to myself, would I be able to be with a girl who had any STD let alone AIDS? Am I selfish for thinking that? Maybe... but that is just how I feel. With that being said it was just very encouraging and inspiring to see how his partner was.

  1. Thats awesome! I did not know that Zackie did all those things during grade school. And as to what you said before about him being with Zackie in the end, the interesting this was in the documentary he says that they are former partners. That is probably why it was so easy to stay with him because they are not romantically involved anymore. Or at least that's what I think it said during the film. Other then that though I do agree with you that Zackie was very impactful to this cause and probably other causes before it.
